Statistical Sampling

Sampling that uses random selection and probability theory to evaluate results and quantify sampling risk.

Definition

Statistical sampling allows the auditor to state conclusions with a defined confidence level and precision. Methods include random, systematic, and stratified selection, combined with attribute or variable evaluation.

Example

Using a 95 percent confidence coefficient, the auditor concludes the error rate does not exceed 5 percent.

Exam tip

Choose statistical sampling when results must be objectively defensible.
