Squash Merge

Combining all commits from a branch into a single new commit on the target branch.

Definition

Squash merging keeps the main branch history clean with one commit per pull request but loses individual commit granularity. GitHub, GitLab, and Azure Repos offer it as a PR merge option.

Example

A PR with 12 'wip' commits is squash-merged as one 'Add BGP config generator' commit.

Exam tip

Squash produces linear history without merge commits; rebase-merge keeps individual commits.
