SQL Injection Prevention

The set of defenses that stop SQL injection, led by parameterized queries and supported by validation and least privilege.

Definition

OWASP's recommended order is: prepared statements with parameterized queries, properly constructed stored procedures, allowlist validation for elements that cannot be parameterized, and escaping as a last resort. Additional layers include least-privileged database accounts, ORMs, WAF rules and error suppression.

Example

A legacy query is refactored to use bound parameters and the app's DB account loses DROP rights.

Exam tip

Parameterization is primary; least privilege limits impact; WAFs are compensating.
