Speaker Level

The high-power amplified signal sent from a power amplifier to loudspeakers, from a few volts to tens of volts.

Definition

Speaker-level signals carry significant current and use heavier-gauge cable to minimize power loss. They must never be connected to line or mic inputs, which can be damaged. Low-impedance and constant-voltage (70 V or 100 V) systems are the two common loudspeaker distribution methods.

Example

A 100 W amplifier channel drives a pair of 8-ohm loudspeakers wired in parallel at speaker level.

Exam tip

Wire gauge matters for speaker level; longer runs need thicker cable to limit loss.
