Span

A single named, timed operation within a distributed trace, such as an HTTP call or database query.

Definition

A span contains a trace ID, its own span ID, a parent span ID, start and end timestamps, status, and attributes. Spans nest to form a tree that represents the full request.

Example

A 'SELECT orders' span is a child of the 'GET /orders' server span.

Exam tip

A trace is made of spans; the root span has no parent.
