Slot Time

The basic time unit for 802.11 backoff counting: 9 microseconds for OFDM or 20 microseconds for DSSS.

Definition

Backoff counters decrement once per idle slot. Short slot time (9 µs) is used when no 802.11b stations are present. Slot time also determines DIFS and AIFS durations.

Exam tip

Presence of 802.11b forces long (20 µs) slot time in 2.4 GHz.
