Sigstore

An open-source project (OpenSSF) providing free tooling and public infrastructure for signing and verifying software artifacts.

Definition

Sigstore enables keyless signing: developers authenticate with OpenID Connect, Fulcio issues a short-lived signing certificate, and signatures are recorded in the Rekor transparency log. Cosign signs container images and other artifacts. npm, PyPI and Kubernetes use Sigstore for provenance or signing.

Example

A release pipeline signs its container image with Cosign using the CI workload identity, with no long-lived private key.

Exam tip

Keyless signing plus a transparency log is the distinctive Sigstore idea.
