Session Invalidation

Destroying a session on the server so its identifier can no longer be used, such as at logout or password change.

Definition

Deleting only the client cookie is insufficient because a copied token would still work. Applications should invalidate server-side sessions at logout, password reset, privilege changes and suspected compromise, and offer 'sign out of all devices'.

Example

After a password change, all other active sessions for the account are terminated.

Exam tip

Logout must invalidate the token on the server, not just clear the cookie.
