Service Level Objective (SLO)

A target value or range for an SLI over a time window, such as 99.9% of requests succeeding over 30 days.

Definition

SLOs define how reliable a service needs to be from the user's perspective and are set internally by the service owners. The gap between 100% and the SLO is the error budget. SLOs are normally stricter than any external SLA so teams get warning before contractual penalties apply.

Example

Checkout API SLO: 99.95% of requests return non-5xx responses over a rolling 28-day window.

Exam tip

SLOs should be set below 100%; a 100% target leaves no error budget and blocks all change.
