SELECT Statement

The SQL statement that retrieves rows and columns from one or more tables or views.

Definition

A SELECT can project columns, filter rows (WHERE), join tables, group and aggregate (GROUP BY and HAVING), sort (ORDER BY) and limit results. Its clauses are written in one order but logically processed in another, starting with FROM.

Example

SELECT Name, Salary FROM Employees WHERE Salary > 80000 ORDER BY Salary DESC;

Exam tip

SELECT * is discouraged in production and in columnar warehouses because it reads every column.
