Segmentation

Using network separation as a containment measure to restrict an attacker's ability to move or communicate.

Definition

During incidents, responders may move affected systems to an isolated VLAN, apply ACLs or microsegmentation policies to limit spread while allowing investigation. As a preventive control, segmentation limits lateral movement.

Example

Moving compromised servers into a quarantine VLAN that only the IR team can reach.

Exam tip

Security+ lists isolation and segmentation as containment techniques.
