Security Zone

Logical grouping of networks or interfaces with the same trust level, with policy applied between zones.

Definition

Zone-based designs group interfaces into zones such as inside, outside, DMZ, and guest, and firewall policies control inter-zone traffic. Palo Alto Networks, Juniper SRX, Fortinet, and Cisco zone-based firewalls all use zones. Traffic within a zone is often allowed by default, while inter-zone traffic is denied unless permitted.

Example

A Palo Alto rule allows traffic from zone Trust to zone Untrust on application web-browsing.

Exam tip

Zones are the building blocks of firewall policy; know default intrazone allow versus interzone deny.
