Security Gate

A checkpoint in the SDLC or CI/CD pipeline where defined security criteria must be met before work proceeds.

Definition

Gates may be manual (design review sign-off) or automated (fail the build on critical SAST or SCA findings, unsigned artifacts or exposed secrets). Gates should be tuned to avoid blocking on false positives, often by breaking only on high-confidence, high-severity issues.

Example

The pipeline blocks deployment when the SCA scan finds a dependency in the CISA KEV catalog.

Exam tip

Pipelines use quality/security gates to enforce policy automatically; too many hard gates slow delivery.
