Security Baseline

A documented minimum set of security configurations and controls that a system type must meet.

Definition

A security baseline defines the approved secure configuration for operating systems, applications, and devices. Baselines are often derived from CIS Benchmarks, DISA STIGs, or vendor guidance and enforced through configuration management tools. Deviations from the baseline indicate drift or compromise.

Example

All Windows servers are built from an image that meets the CIS Level 1 benchmark.

Exam tip

Baseline = minimum standard; compare systems to it to detect configuration drift.
