Secure Error Handling

Handling errors and exceptions so the application fails securely, reveals minimal information and logs useful detail internally.

Definition

Secure error handling catches exceptions at appropriate layers, denies access on failure (fail closed), avoids leaking stack traces, releases resources and logs events with correlation IDs. Unhandled exceptions can cause crashes, data corruption or bypasses.

Example

A global exception handler returns HTTP 500 with a reference ID while logging the full stack trace.

Exam tip

Errors should fail closed and generically; OWASP Top 10 2025 lists Mishandling of Exceptional Conditions.
