Secure Coding Standard

An organization's documented rules for writing code that avoids known vulnerability classes.

Definition

Standards specify required practices (parameterized queries, output encoding, approved crypto) and banned constructs (unsafe functions, hard-coded secrets). They are often based on SEI CERT, OWASP or MISRA and enforced through training, linters, SAST rules and code review.

Example

The standard bans strcpy and requires the use of bounded string functions in C modules.

Exam tip

Standards are enforced through automated tooling plus code review; training alone is insufficient.
