Scattering

Reflection of RF in many directions when it strikes uneven surfaces or small particles.

Definition

Scattering happens when a wave hits objects that are small relative to the wavelength or rough surfaces such as chain-link fences, foliage, rain, or dust. The energy is spread in multiple directions, weakening the main signal. It is a form of multiple reflection.

Example

Heavy rain scatters a 5 GHz outdoor bridge signal.

Exam tip

Rough surfaces and small objects cause scattering rather than a single reflection.
