SameSite Cookie Attribute

A cookie attribute (Strict, Lax or None) controlling whether a cookie is sent with cross-site requests, mitigating CSRF.

Definition

Strict never sends the cookie cross-site; Lax sends it only on top-level safe navigations (GET); None always sends it but requires Secure. Major browsers default to Lax when unspecified. It is defense in depth alongside anti-CSRF tokens.

Example

Set-Cookie: session=abc; SameSite=Strict; Secure; HttpOnly

Exam tip

SameSite=None must be paired with Secure; Lax is the common browser default.
