S3 Presigned URL

Time-limited URL signed with a principal's credentials that grants temporary access to a specific S3 object.

Definition

A presigned URL embeds a signature and expiration so anyone holding it can GET or PUT a specific object without AWS credentials, limited to the permissions of the signer. URLs signed with long-term IAM user credentials can last up to 7 days; those signed with temporary credentials expire when the credentials do.

Example

A web app generates a 15-minute presigned PUT URL so a browser uploads a file directly to S3.

Exam tip

Presigned URLs are the answer for temporary access to private objects without making the bucket public.
