Routing Information Protocol (RIP)

A distance-vector IGP that uses hop count as its metric, with a 15-hop maximum and 30-second periodic updates.

Definition

RIP sends its routing table to neighbors every 30 seconds over UDP port 520. Cisco timers default to invalid 180, hold-down 180 and flush 240 seconds, and the AD is 120. RIPv1 is classful and broadcast based, RIPv2 is classless and multicasts to 224.0.0.9, and RIPng supports IPv6.

Example

router rip / version 2 / no auto-summary / network 10.0.0.0

Exam tip

RIPv2 still auto-summarizes on older IOS by default; no auto-summary is a common configuration fix.
