Roll Forward

Fixing a failed release by deploying a new corrective version rather than reverting to the previous one.

Definition

Rolling forward is used when rollback is impossible or riskier, for example after irreversible data migrations. It requires a fast pipeline so a fix can reach production quickly.

Example

After a migration drops a column, the team ships a hotfix release instead of restoring the old code.

Exam tip

Rollback is usually the safer default; roll forward when changes are not reversible.
