Risk Owner

Person or entity with the accountability and authority to manage a risk, including accepting it.

Definition

The risk owner is usually a business leader responsible for the process or asset affected. They decide on treatment, approve acceptance, and ensure actions are completed. Assigning owners prevents risks from being orphaned in the register.

Example

The VP of Sales owns the risk associated with the CRM platform and approves its treatment plan.

Exam tip

Security advises, but the business risk owner decides; this is a frequent CRISC and CISM trap.
