Rightsizing

Matching resource types and sizes to actual workload requirements to eliminate waste while maintaining performance.

Definition

Rightsizing analyzes utilization metrics such as CPU, memory, network and IOPS to downsize, upsize or change families of instances, databases and volumes. It should precede purchasing commitments so discounts are not locked onto oversized resources. Tools include AWS Compute Optimizer, Azure Advisor and Google Cloud Recommender.

Example

VMs averaging 5 percent CPU are moved from 8 vCPU to 2 vCPU sizes, cutting their compute cost by 75 percent.

Exam tip

Rightsize first, then buy reservations or savings plans; committing first locks in waste.
