Reverse Proxy

A proxy that sits in front of servers and accepts client requests on their behalf, often providing TLS termination, caching and load balancing.

Definition

Reverse proxies hide internal server details, offload encryption, and can host web application firewall functions. NGINX, HAProxy and cloud application gateways commonly fill this role.

Example

NGINX receives HTTPS requests on port 443 and forwards them to application servers on port 8080.

Exam tip

Reverse proxy = server-side; clients do not know it is there.
