Resource Tagging

Attaching key-value metadata labels to cloud resources for cost allocation, automation, access control and organization.

Definition

Tags (labels in Google Cloud) are key-value pairs applied to resources such as instances, buckets and databases. A consistent tagging strategy enables cost allocation reports, automation targeting, attribute-based access control and inventory, and can be enforced with policies.

Example

Every resource gets CostCenter=4120 and Environment=prod tags so finance can allocate spend by department.

Exam tip

Tags do not inherit by default in Azure from resource groups; use Azure Policy to inherit or enforce them.
