Request for Comments (RFC)

The IETF document series that publishes Internet standards, best practices and informational specifications.

Definition

RFCs define protocols such as IPv4 (RFC 791), TCP (RFC 9293), DHCP (RFC 2131) and private addressing (RFC 1918). Not every RFC is a standard; categories include Standards Track, Best Current Practice, Informational and Experimental. RFC numbers are never reused, and updates are published as new RFCs that obsolete older ones.

Example

RFC 1918 defines the 10/8, 172.16/12 and 192.168/16 private address blocks.

Exam tip

"RFC 1918 addresses" is exam shorthand for private IPv4 addresses.
