Replication

Copying data continuously or frequently to another system or location to support availability and low RPO.

Definition

Synchronous replication writes to both sites before acknowledging, enabling near-zero data loss but adding latency and distance limits. Asynchronous replication sends changes after acknowledgment, allowing longer distances with some potential data loss. Replication also copies corruption and ransomware encryption, so backups are still required.

Example

Asynchronous database replication to a secondary region with a 5-minute lag.

Exam tip

Replication is not backup; it faithfully replicates deletions and encryption.
