Relational Database Management System (RDBMS)

Software that creates, manages and queries relational databases, enforcing schemas, constraints, security and transactions.

Definition

An RDBMS is the engine that implements the relational model: it stores tables, parses and optimizes SQL, enforces constraints and referential integrity, manages concurrency and logs transactions for recovery. Common examples are Oracle Database, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL and MySQL.

Example

PostgreSQL, SQL Server and Oracle Database are all RDBMS products.

Exam tip

Distinguish the RDBMS (the software) from the database (the data it manages) and from the schema (the structure).
