Reimaging

Restoring a system from a known-good image to remove compromise rather than attempting to clean it.

Definition

Reimaging provides higher assurance than manual cleanup when malware may have hidden persistence or rootkit capability. It should be done after evidence is collected. Rebuilt systems must be patched and hardened before reconnection.

Example

Wiping a compromised workstation and deploying the standard corporate image.

Exam tip

Rootkit or unknown-scope compromise usually calls for reimaging.
