Rayleigh Fading

Rapid signal-strength variation caused by multipath when there is no dominant line-of-sight path.

Definition

Rayleigh fading models environments where many scattered paths combine without a direct path. Signal strength can swing many dB over short distances or times. Rician fading describes the case with a strong line-of-sight component.

Exam tip

Fading is why survey readings fluctuate even when standing still.
