Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP)

IEEE 802.1w, a faster STP that uses proposal/agreement handshakes, edge ports and alternate ports to converge in seconds or less.

Definition

RSTP defines port roles (root, designated, alternate, backup) and states (discarding, learning, forwarding). Point-to-point links converge rapidly through proposal/agreement sync. Every switch sends BPDUs every hello and treats three missed hellos as failure. It is backward compatible with 802.1D, was incorporated into 802.1D-2004, and is the Junos default.

Example

set protocols rstp interface all on Junos

Exam tip

RSTP fast transition requires point-to-point full-duplex links or edge ports; half-duplex links fall back to slower timers.
