Public Key Cryptography Standards #7 (PKCS #7)

Format (.p7b/.p7c) for signed or enveloped data, often used to bundle certificate chains without private keys.

Definition

PKCS #7, standardized as Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS), can carry certificates, CRLs, signed data, and encrypted data. P7B files are commonly used to distribute certificate chains to Windows and Java systems. They never contain private keys.

Example

A CA delivers a .p7b containing the server certificate plus its intermediate and root certificates.

Exam tip

P7B = chain only, no private key.
