Primary Channel

The 20 MHz channel within a wider bonded channel on which beacons and control frames are sent.

Definition

In bonded channels, the primary 20 MHz carries management and control frames and is used for contention. Secondary channels are used only when idle. Mismatched primaries between overlapping BSSs complicate CCA behavior.

Exam tip

Beacons are sent on the primary 20 MHz channel only.
