PCI Security Standards Council (PCI SSC)

Global forum founded by major card brands that develops and maintains PCI security standards.

Definition

Founded in 2006 by American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, and Visa (UnionPay later joined as a strategic member), the PCI SSC manages PCI DSS, PCI PIN, P2PE, the Secure Software Standard, and others, and qualifies assessors (QSAs, ISAs, ASVs). Enforcement and penalties are set by card brands, not the Council.

Example

The Council publishes the PCI DSS v4.0.1 standard and supporting SAQs.

Exam tip

The Council writes the standards; card brands and acquirers enforce them.
