Parsing

Extracting structured fields from raw log data so events can be searched and correlated.

Definition

Parsers use regular expressions, delimiters or format-specific rules (JSON, CEF, LEEF) to split events into fields such as timestamp, host, user and action. Parsing can occur at ingestion or at search time. Broken parsing causes missed detections.

Example

A regex that extracts the username from an SSH "Failed password for" log line.

Exam tip

Parsing failures lead to false negatives because rules cannot find the fields they expect.
