Packet Switching

A method in which data is divided into packets that are forwarded independently and share network links with other traffic.

Definition

Packet switching uses links efficiently through statistical multiplexing, and each packet can take a different path. It is the basis of IP networks and the Internet. The tradeoff is variable delay and possible loss during congestion.

Example

Two packets of the same download may traverse different routers to reach the client.

Exam tip

The Internet is packet-switched; the legacy telephone network is circuit-switched.
