Routing & Switching · Foundational

OSPF Priority

An interface value from 0 to 255 (default 1) used in DR/BDR election; 0 makes the router ineligible.

Definition

The highest priority becomes DR and the second highest BDR; ties are broken by the highest router ID. Setting priority 0 on spoke interfaces in a hub-and-spoke NBMA design ensures the hub is DR.

Example

ip ospf priority 0

Exam tip

Priority 0 prevents a router from ever becoming DR or BDR.
