Non-Wi-Fi Interference

RF energy from devices that do not use 802.11, such as microwave ovens, Bluetooth, and cordless phones.

Definition

Non-Wi-Fi devices share unlicensed bands and are not subject to 802.11 contention rules. They raise the noise floor or occupy airtime, causing retries and lower data rates. Spectrum analysis identifies their signatures.

Example

A microwave oven interferes with 2.4 GHz channels around 2.45 GHz.

Exam tip

Wi-Fi protocol analyzers cannot identify non-Wi-Fi sources.
