NIST IR 8547

NIST report setting the timeline to deprecate and then disallow quantum-vulnerable public key algorithms.

Definition

NIST IR 8547, Transition to Post-Quantum Cryptography Standards, proposes deprecating RSA and ECC at the 112-bit security level after 2030 and disallowing quantum-vulnerable algorithms such as RSA, ECDSA, EdDSA, DH, and ECDH after 2035. It maps classical algorithms to their PQC replacements. Organizations use it to plan migration deadlines.

Example

A federal contractor schedules all RSA-2048 certificates to be replaced before the 2030 deprecation date.

Exam tip

Remember the dates: 2030 deprecated (112-bit), 2035 disallowed.
