NIC Teaming

Combining multiple NICs on a host into one logical interface for redundancy, load balancing or both.

Definition

Also called bonding (Linux) or link aggregation, teaming can work independently of the switch or use LACP to form a port channel with it. It provides failover if a cable, NIC or switch port fails.

Example

A Windows Server team of two 10 GbE NICs keeps the host online if one link fails.

Exam tip

Switch-dependent teaming requires matching switch configuration such as LACP.
