Network Troubleshooting Methodology

The structured seven-step process: identify the problem, establish a theory, test it, plan, implement, verify functionality and document.

Definition

CompTIA's method begins with gathering information, questioning users, identifying symptoms and recent changes, then establishing a theory of probable cause (top-down, bottom-up or divide-and-conquer), testing it, establishing a plan of action and identifying effects, implementing or escalating, verifying full functionality with preventive measures, and documenting findings.

Example

A technician learns a switch was replaced yesterday, theorizes a VLAN error, confirms it, fixes it and documents the change.

Exam tip

Know the steps in order; documentation is always last.
