Network Address

The first address in a subnet, with all host bits set to 0, which identifies the subnet itself.

Definition

The network address (network ID) appears in routing tables and cannot be assigned to a host in conventional IPv4 subnets. It is found by ANDing any host address with the subnet mask. In a /31 point-to-point link, both addresses are usable and there is no separate network address in practice.

Example

The network address for 192.168.1.77/26 is 192.168.1.64.

Exam tip

To find it quickly, round the host's interesting octet down to a multiple of the block size.
