Near-End Crosstalk (NEXT)

Crosstalk measured at the same end of the cable as the transmitter, usually caused by poor terminations.

Definition

NEXT is one of the key parameters on a cable certifier report. Failures typically indicate excessively untwisted pairs, wrong-category connectors or damaged cable near the end.

Example

A certifier reports a NEXT failure at the patch panel end of a link.

Exam tip

NEXT failures usually mean a bad termination near the tester end.
