Multicast Address Ranges

Key IPv4 multicast blocks: 224.0.0.0/24 link-local, 232.0.0.0/8 SSM, 233.0.0.0/8 GLOP and 239.0.0.0/8 administratively scoped.

Definition

224.0.0.0/24 is local network control (never routed, TTL 1), including 224.0.0.5/6 for OSPF and 224.0.0.10 for EIGRP. 224.0.1.0/24 holds internetwork control such as Auto-RP (224.0.1.39 and 224.0.1.40). 232/8 is reserved for Source-Specific Multicast, and 239/8 is the private, organization-local scope.

Example

239.10.10.10 is used for an internal video feed.

Exam tip

239/8 is the private multicast range, analogous to RFC 1918 unicast addresses.
