Milliwatt (mW)

One thousandth of a watt; the common linear unit of RF transmit power for Wi-Fi.

Definition

Wi-Fi transmit power is usually between about 1 mW and 100 mW (0 to 20 dBm) per radio chain. Milliwatts are linear, so they must be converted to dBm before being combined with dB gains and losses. Regulatory limits are often published in both mW and dBm.

Example

An AP set to 25 mW is transmitting at about 14 dBm.

Exam tip

Convert to dBm before adding gains and losses; never add dB to mW directly.
