Memory-Safe Language

A programming language that prevents memory errors such as buffer overflows and use-after-free by design.

Definition

Languages such as Rust, Go, Java, C#, Python and Swift manage memory or enforce ownership rules, eliminating whole vulnerability classes common in C and C++. CISA, NSA and other agencies urge memory-safety roadmaps because memory-safety bugs have historically made up most critical vulnerabilities in large C/C++ codebases.

Example

A team rewrites a parsing library from C to Rust to eliminate out-of-bounds reads.

Exam tip

Memory-safe languages are a strategic mitigation for buffer overflows and use-after-free.
