Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)

The average time required to repair a failed component or system and return it to service.

Definition

In reliability and continuity contexts, MTTR measures maintainability and directly affects availability. Spare parts, support contracts and automation reduce it. It should be lower than the RTO for critical systems.

Example

Replacing a failed power supply takes an average of 45 minutes, the MTTR for that component.

Exam tip

In BC/DR questions, MTTR means repair; in SOC metrics it often means respond.
