Maximum Tolerable Downtime (MTD)

The longest period a business function can be unavailable before causing unacceptable or irrecoverable harm.

Definition

Also called maximum tolerable period of disruption (MTPD) or maximum allowable downtime, MTD is determined in the BIA. RTO plus work recovery time must not exceed MTD.

Example

If payroll MTD is 72 hours, recovery plans must restore it and validate data well within that window.

Exam tip

RTO + WRT less than or equal to MTD; MTD is the absolute ceiling.
