Mail Exchanger Record (MX)

A DNS record that identifies the mail servers that accept email for a domain, with preference values.

Definition

Sending mail servers look up MX records and try the lowest preference value first. The MX target must be a host name with an A or AAAA record, not a CNAME or IP address.

Example

example.com. MX 10 mail1.example.com.

Exam tip

Lower MX preference number = higher priority.
