Link Aggregation Control Protocol (LACP)

IEEE 802.3ad/802.1AX protocol that negotiates link aggregation bundles; modes active and passive.

Definition

Active initiates negotiation; passive only responds, so passive-passive never forms a bundle. LACP supports up to 16 links per bundle with 8 active and 8 hot standby on many Cisco platforms. System priority and port priority determine which links are active. Junos uses LACP on aggregated Ethernet (ae) interfaces.

Example

channel-group 1 mode active ; set interfaces ae0 aggregated-ether-options lacp active

Exam tip

LACP passive + passive = no channel; active + passive = channel.
